Questions by Waysideviolet
I want to wish all of my Mexican friends a very happy Cinco de Mayo! To celebrate we have a beautiful interview and giveaway from the gorgeous Aida Coronado! Their shop announcement says, “We enjoy bringing our traditions and vintage techniques to this new world, we create and believe in…pieces with a heart, clothes to love and wear every day. We love what we do.” And you can tell! Each piece is so thoughtfully and beautifully put together. You’ll fall in love!
Q. Could you tell us a little about yourself? My name is Aida and I am a lucky girl who was born in beautiful Mexico, I grew up living between the Mexican and the North American cultures. I was the kind of girl that was always doing things her own way and getting in trouble because of that, I remember a lot my maestra (teacher) undoing all my embroidery once and again because she did not like my way of doing it, but I loved it!
I have always had trouble understanding why things have to be the way they are supposed to be? I am a very curious person, and I love doing things just because I am curious about it and want to experience it, I love my dogs cat Family and husband and feel very happy and grateful for my life. I spent a few years in the USA, and I was about to move to Canada, but then, I realized that there was so much about my own country and culture that I did not know that decided to come back to Mexico and to explore it. And I am so glad I did! I am delighted with our culture and traditions, the magic, beauty and meanings of the traditional clothing and folk art in Mexico.
I have always been independent on my clothing style, I am always cutting, mixing and matching what I have in my wardrobe until I get what I am looking for, most of the times I am not even sure what I am after but at some point I just know that I have found it! Clothes for me are more than just a piece of fabric to cover you up, clothes have a meaning, of course there is a fashion side to it, but there is also a long and beautiful process to make them and have them ready for you. When we choose our clothes we are in a state of mind we want to materialize, when we want to change something in our lives most of the times we change something about our appearance and clothing style, the garment then becomes like the icon that represents that state of mind, and every time we choose something new to add to our wardrobe this piece carries that energy, this is love
I think every dress we have made and we will make, goes for someone in special, like it was meant to be, I like to think about the girls who wear our dresses, and I imagine everybody happy, full of energy and smiles, like a day in Mexico! and I love to read and see this is what happens with our friends and customers!, like I said before, I am a lucky and grateful girl.
Q. How did you begin making clothes?
I started experimenting with my own clothes when I was very young and learned how to sew from my Mom who used to work as a seamstress besides having learned a little bit at school. I had some ideas while in the “Universidad” about making some clothes, but it was not until I came back to Mexico and fell in love with all the colors, vibrancy and the wonderful feeling of wearing authentic and traditional clothing, that (almost 5 years ago), I started making clothes for other people, first under request after this on Aidacoronado.com, and it has been a very rewarding experience in all senses.
Q. Your shop is so beautiful! What is your creative process like?Gracias! mmmm I never asked that question to myself before and now that I think about it, I believe I do not have a very defined process like such. I love talking to people in all different communities in Mexico, and learning from them. I really enjoy all the history about it, the ancient techniques, the symbology, the art, everything! I also spend some time talking to people who has been in the clothing business for a long time and love hearing all the stories from the 60’s in Mexico and seeing dresses or pictures of the styles of those years. And that´s the way I come up with a lot of ideas and designs, by taking details from different styles and eras and mixing them together to create my own version, what you see is the results
So I guess that´s pretty much my process, be there, experience it and express it my own way.
Q. What’s a normal day in your life like?
I love that everyday is a bit different from the other, I really love what I do. One day I can be shipping, talking by the phone, traveling down by the jungle, the other day I can be cutting or making something that popped in my mind or fulfilling orders, the other day I can be with Luna, Lucas and Gato. And then the beautiful sunsets.
And in the late beautiful nights editing, uploading, reading beautiful blogs and drawing dresses and new pieces, drinking some late “cafe con leche” and ice and eating “pan dulce”.
Q. What inspires you most of all?Just imagining that the pieces that I am making right now will be part of someone´s life and that share special moments with her is very honoring and inspiring. I feel very happy when I read or see that someone is enjoying one of our pieces, I believe in the power of love and I feel that every single piece we make is a representation of our love for people, every piece we make It´s like having the opportunity to give a hug to someone everytime they wear it, and that is a very special feeling and is very inspiring too.
I like to learn and find inspiration all around me, I love watching people and talking to them, specially older people who always tell wonderful stories and usually wear beautiful clothes from a different moment in the history of our country, I love “La epoca de oro del cine Mexicano”, all the color in Mexico, the traditions, the streets, the names, nature, the little towns, I feel I have more inspiration around me that I can made use of.
On the other side good Mexican Food, paletas and coffe are good ways to keep me motivated.
